Based on the 250 Savage case necked down, it was wildcatted in several versions in the 1930s and remained a popular non-standard cartridge for the next 30 years. Remington’s factory version was an overnight success! Today the 22-250 is the most popular long-range varmint cartridge, and probably the most popular 22 centerfire after the 223. All ammunition manufacturers offer it. Loads vary, but 50-grain loads run about 3800 feet per second. Heavier bullets are a bit slower, and with bullets of 40 to 45 grains it reaches or exceeds 4000 fps. It is a standard chambering for most manufacturers of bolt action and single-shot rifles, and is legendary for accuracy and performance on varmints. Bullets of 55 grains and below should be used for varmints; hunters wishing to use their 22-250s for deer should choose bullets of 60 grains and more intended for the purpose. — Craig Boddington
